Nest Bedding has a new hybrid mattress that’s only available on Amazon. Called, Nest Flip, they claim it’s the first flippable hybrid mattress (has coils) available online. We have to challenge that claim because Amore is a hybrid flippable mattress. Maybe it’s less well known?
What does flippable mean? You can flip the mattress and get the side that’s firmer or the other way it’s less firm. One side is a medium and the other side is firm.
The advantage of a hybrid is that it’s more breathable (doesn’t get as warm as memory foam and foam can get) because there’s airflow between the coils than with solid foam. It’s made in the USA (Phoenix) with no China made parts or materials.
Nest Flip is a budget mattress and is priced quite low. Interestingly, every size is priced within $200 of each other. The chart below will show the sizes and prices. Weight is 80-90 pounds and it’s 10 inches thick.
Unbox mattress uses affiliate links and we may earn a commission if you shop through our links.
Amazon reviews for Flip are very strong – almost perfect with a 4.6 out of 5. At the time of writing it has 30 reviews. So we decided to run it through Fakespot. Unfortunately it got an F. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad mattress, it means they have patterns that suggest the reviews were fake.
About 21% of the reviews were deemed real. Since almost all were positive, Flip is still likely a decent mattress for the price. They likely sent out a lot of beds for people in exchange for a review and the reviews followed a similar pattern of timing and what’s said.
We’re giving Nest the benefit of the doubt because overall their mattresses are high quality and the owner Joe is so responsive (and amazing on Twitter). They’re not new to selling mattresses either, the family owned business was started in 2011.
Sleep Trial and Warranty
If you get a Nest Flip and want to return it, you have a 30 Night Sleep Trial. That’s considerably less than the standard 100 days offered by many retailers, however it’s adequate time for most people to know if it’s going to work for them. As far as a warranty, they offer a 10-Year Limited Warranty.
Rather than going through Nest Bedding for returns, they’re handled by Amazon directly.
One of Consumer Reports #1 rated hybrid mattresses – the Voila Mattress is up to 50% off right now
Have you heard of the Voila mattress? We love it here at Unbox Mattress and we have two that we sleep on at our house now for over 2 years. While many people may not be familiar with the brand, it is a very comfortable, well made hybrid (it has springs and foam) mattress. We highly recommend it. The company is so easy to work with and customer service is excellent/responsive.
Voila mattress comes in plush (which is more of a medium and is what we have), medium and firm. Even with the plush you will not sink in and get too warm. It sleeps temperature neutral.
Voila Hybrid Mattress Sale
Voila emailed us to tell us about their “Summer Inventory Blowout” that launches today, Monday, June 3, 2019. Honestly, we’ve never seen this big of a sale on any boxed brand before, ever! It’s amazing. Better than Memorial Day or any other sale.
They are taking 33% – 50% off on all mattresses on their website.
Voila Coupon Codes
Use the following coupon codes to save:

A mattress cover may not seem like a big deal. Not to be confused with a mattress protector – the mattress cover is part of the bed itself. It covers the foam or other materials. Why? Think about the quality of the cover as an indicator of the quality of the mattress. Manufacturers can spend a lot on the cover or on a cheaper bed, spend very little. There’s a lot in between.
Your job is to find the mattress that fits your preferences and offers the most quality for the price. Otherwise you’ll be back into the mattress buying game too soon or worse, wake up in pain.
As a mattress geek I’ve talked to a manufacturer of different mattress brand’s mattress covers and have reviewed many. There’s a wide spectrum of types.
Nectar mattress cover has memory foam quilted into it for a soft, comfortable feel
Nectar mattress has memory foam quilted into it and it’s really soft and well made. Liquids can get into the cover and smells which can be tough to get out, so again, get a good quality mattress protector – we recommend that you only spot treat the cover. See how distinct each square is.
To answer the question though, YES, you can (and should) judge a lot about a mattress by its cover.
Note that this post has links that may pay a commission should you shop through them – which is how our work is possible.
Questions to ask about a Mattress Cover
Can you zip off the mattress cover? If it zips off that also means you can possibly wash the cover if needed. Even some that say they’re not machine washable can be washed on a gentle cycle and air dried.
Look at the quality of the zipper. Does it seem substantial or flimsy? Do you care either way?
Unzip or otherwise feel the fabric – check the thickness and quality of both the front and back cover. Some thinner covers are still made of durable fabric.
Are there any special features of the cover? Some like Ecosa have a waterproof cover. Or an Amore or Avocado have an organic cover.
Is there a smell? Some brands have more extreme offgassing than others and the cover will hold a strong smell from the foam. That means you may need to air it out.
What details are there – for example, the stitching or piping.
How hard are you on a mattress cover? If you have a pet or are a bit rough in bed you should think about a higher end mattress or making sure you get a really good mattress protector that covers the top and all sides.
The colors. If your mattress cover is completely white on the top and sides, it may be harder to keep perfectly clean. Gray or darker colored sides can disguise stains (not show everything).
Does it have special features like tufting – Dreamcloud and Avocado have tufting or raised sections. Some people like that European styling but others may not like feeling the distinct squares of fabric.
Does it have handles? Handles can help you maneuver and rotate a mattress easier.
Closeup of Dreamcloud mattress cover and tufting – note the handle
Ecosa Mattress Cover
We looked at the Ecosa mattress cover to show you its unique features, including a waterproof inner layer and a removeable cover that can be washed in a washing machine. The back features nonskid dots.
This is a great mattress for someone who sleeps with a pet because the waterproof layer will protect your mattress from hair, pee and other substances getting inside of the foam and breaking it down. It helps prevent smells too.
Value brands like Linenspa, Zinus or cheaper Amazon brands often have covers that will usually pill easier, be thinner and use lower quality materials (but you get an excellent price and if you care for it well could end up being a great value). Some backs tear very easily and if you plan on moving it around, you’ll want to buy a mattress protector like this one that covers all sides and the bottom of the bed. It’s called an encasement or 6-sided mattress protector.
Compared to other mattresses in their price range, normally a mattress that costs $1k and up will have much better covers than lower priced mattresses.
We really love the Puffy mattress cover for its originality. The clouds really match the brand and the premium gray fabric on the foot of the mattress give it a more luxury feel.
Puffy mattress cover
For the most part, mid-tier brands like Casper, Leesa, Lull, Helix, Layla (the original models) won’t be made as of high quality of material as their higher end models.
Lull mattress cover
Layla’s cover features a design that shows you which side to sleep on depending on if you want the softer or more firm end.
Bed in a Box mattress is in the middle, it’s more unique and has more color than a lot of mattress covers.
Serenity bed in a box mattress cover close up – it also has handles
High End Mattress Covers
However, if we had to vote on the best mattress cover in this class, it would be a Purple original mattress. Never try to move a Purple mattress without a cover on it – it’s very difficult! The new Purple mattress covers have a lot more detailing and style, plus are even more durable.
The original Purple mattress cover is all white but cleans well and is well made
Would you pay as much for a book that has no cover, a torn cover or a cheaper paper cover? We do judge a lot of things by their appearance and feel. Like books, you can get a feel for the quality of a mattress by its cover.
A lot of people don’t understand what a cal king bed is. They mistakenly think that a cal king mattress is higher off the ground when in reality a cal king is longer and more narrow than a regular king size mattress. As a result many mattress companies end up with far more returned cal king size mattresses. Customers are ordering and then returning them and costing a lot of extra money in returns and for lost customer satisfaction.
Box bed websites should clearly state the dimensions of a cal king bed at the time of order to make sure people don’t accidentally order the wrong one.
Cal King Mattress Size in Inches
A cal or California king size mattress in inches (the dimensions) are: 72 inches x 84 inches. They’re 72 inches wide and 84 inches in length. That’s 4 inches longer than a regular king. If you’re a tall person that extra length is very important! It’s more rectangular in shape.
A regular king is 76 inches wide by 80 inches in length. Both add up to 156 inches (same amount of material) which is why they’re usually priced the same. It’s almost a square. Two twins make up a king and two twin XLs make up a cal king. An Eastern king is the same as a regular king.
Who Should Order a Cal King Bed?
Usually only people over 6 foot 3 inches need a Cal king. Someone who is 6′ 3″ is actually 75 inches tall. A king mattress is 80 inches tall and a Cal king is 84 inches (7 feet!) tall. It you’re tall person sleeping on a regular king, your head may bump against the headboard, your feet may bump against the footboard. When you sleep on your back you’re stretched out more and may touch both the head and foot of the bed! You’ll feel very cramped. So you should get a cal king size bed.
The other perfect customer for a king size bed is someone who’s bedroom is not wide enough to fit a regular king or the space is too tight. Cal kings were named after the state of California. This size of mattress was created because in California they built houses with smaller rooms to save space. So people in California are often familiar with what a cal king is. But outside of California a lot of people don’t know.
In person you can easily tell the difference between a king and a cal king. Online you can’t. You might accidentally order a cal king and then return it when it doesn’t fit your bed frame. We think by putting the dimensions right on the order and making it clear during the ordering process there will be less mistakes made.
Tip for Bed in a Box Mattress Companies
Include the dimensions of the mattress in the checkout process.
See how the cal king is obviously 10 inches thick and the only thing that changes is the length and width? This company gives the prices but we recommend adding the dimensions too.
This mattress company doesn’t have the dimensions and likely has a higher return rate on California king size beds.
Split California King Adjustable Bed with Mattress
Cal kings do come in split cal kings too. They are two twins that are 84″ long but no one sells them separately. You have to buy them as a set and people usually get them with an adjustable base. As far as we know there’s no such thing as a california queen size mattress.
Here are some split cal kings adjustable beds.
All boxed brands we’ve seen offer a cal king but not a split cal king. For those, check the Amazon links above.

Just in time for Casper’s 5th birthday, Casper just announced two new beds which are both hybrid (foam and springs): the Wave Hybrid and The Casper Hybrid. If you like a thicker more high end mattress, this is for you.
The Casper Hybrid Collection is a new line of mattresses that features premium foam with resilient springs for luxurious comfort and support. After almost five years of R&D, user testing, and the latest sleep science and technology, the company says, they pair “pressure-relieving, contouring foams with durable-yet-gentle springs…” They are the first Casper mattresses to feature springs.
The Hybrid Collection is available in two models — the Casper Hybrid and the Wave Hybrid. Of the two, The Wave is the ultimate because it has a wool cover and perforated foam for increased airflow. Best of all, they’re still priced lower than other showroom type mattresses.

This week, (April 22, 2019), Buffy launched a new product in addition to their top-selling Cloud comforter. It’s called The Breeze. The Breeze lightweight comforter was created for you if you want a comforter but you sleep hot. Or to change out your bedding to make it more lightweight for summer. It features lighter breathable fabric and eucalyptus fill.
What makes The Breeze different from other cooling comforters? There are other versions on the market filled with bamboo viscose, straw, milkweed, and other materials. However, Buffy is the first company to create a 100% plant-based comforter for the mass market and the first to be made entirely from eucalyptus. Eucalyptus fiber is biodegradable and uses less water and land to produce than cotton.
The Breeze comes in all sizes. See prices and exact sizing below.

Luma Sleep makes a bed that we really like. Before we tell you why, here’s some background about Luma. They are a Florida-based mattress manufacturer. It was created with guidance from “The Sleep Doctor,” Michael J. Breus, PhD. They have a lot of options but you should know that it’s a latex based bed and comes in 3 firmness levels.
The Luma Mattress is a hybrid bed and comes in 3 models, all feature:
Mattress and Topper lines are made with 100% natural latex along with foam and pocketed coils
100 day free trial
15 year warranty
Made in the US
High quality mattress
A selection of adjustable bed bases
3 Reasons to Love the Luma Sleep Bed
1. 0% Financing
This is a premium bed and it’s reasonable but a little higher priced than some other bed in a box brands but with the quality it’s a great value. If you are looking for an affordable monthly payment you can get 0% financing if you pay within 6 months.
2. Comes in 3 Firmness Levels that Can be Exchanged For Up to a Year!
What you’re going to love is that this bed give you choices. You can choose ‘Plush’ (3.5), ‘Medium Firm’ (6), and ‘Firm’ (7.5). You have up to a year to exchange the top layer to fit your preference too!
We’ve found that addresses the #1 reason people return a mattress – it’s too firm or too soft. Luma addresses this and gives you plenty of time to be sure you have the firmness you sleep best on. And with the exchange you can find the firmness level that fits your preference.
The basic Luma mattress comes is an exception – it just comes in 2 firmness levels. The mattress can be exchanged for the other firmness level for up to a year after purchase.
The Latex Hybrid Slumber System has a 3″ topper can be exchanged for a different firmness level for up to a year after a purchase.
The All-Latex Slumber System includes …a 3″ Talalay latex topper in your choice of 3 firmness levels. The system comes with 2 queen size Talalay latex pillows, a mattress protector and free white glove delivery. The topper can also be exchanged for a different firmness level for a year after a purchase.
3. Luma is a Heavyweight!
You may think of a heavy bed as a negative but it’s actually a plus! It might be harder to move this mattress but here’s why that’s a good thing: weight is a sign of quality. Cheaper beds use light weight foams that aren’t going to last as long.
It might be easier to move a lighter bed but you’ll have to replace it more often. This mattress should last twice as long as most of the top brands you’ve heard of.
Here are some weight and prices to show you what we mean:
Queen Luma mattress weighs 100 lbs. and is $995
Queen Natural Latex Hybrid weighs 135 lbs. and is $1,295
Queen Hybrid Slumber System weighs 155 lbs and is $1,695.00
Queen All Latex Slumber System weighs 185 lbs and is $1,995
If you just need a top layer:
3″ Talalay Latex Comfort Layer From $375
2″ Talalay Latex Mattress Topper from $300
If you’re in the market for a new mattress, like natural latex and want to buy from a solid company that is transparent, recommended and makes their beds in the US, Luma is a great choice. Combine that with the firmness level exchange, 0% financing and quality, Luma will make even the pickiest sleepers happy.
Eight Mattress is already the most high tech mattress we know. Today they announced a new mattress that will automatically adjust to your body temperature. It’s called the Eight Sleep Pod. It’s not a nap pod or something that encloses over you. This high tech mattress uses liquid embedded into the layers to regulate the temperature.
We haven’t seen anything like it!
The company says they used 43 million hours of sleep data, insights from over 30,000 sleepers and says they collaborated with 5 leading sleep researchers to come up with the Pod.
Unbox Mattress may earn a commission on your purchase of a Pod.
Pod tracks your sleep and learns the right temperature for you. Features personalized temperature regulation on each side of the bed. Temperatures can range between 55° and 115°F so it’s ideal for any climate.
The Pod is the only bed that dynamically adjusts its temperature to be perfect for you all night long. It monitors your sleep patterns, learns your temperature preferences and cools and heats to keep you comfortable.
There are sensors in the 4 layers of foam and it’s a liquid based thermoelectric system.
During the night the bed keeps you at thermoneutral or to your settings. Best of all, if you sleep with someone, both the dynamic temperature and biometric tracking work independently for each side of the bed. That means one side can be cooled (for example, if she has menopausal symptoms such as night sweats) and the other side could be neutral (so he doesn’t freeze while she tries to stay comfortable).
In addition to helping you sleep by getting the temperature just right, the Pod can act as a thermo alarm to wake you up gradually and naturally, without the sound of an alarm. It gradually cools the bed in the morning and can adjust the temperature to help you fall asleep at night.
