Hello Unboxers,

I’ve unboxed the Eco Terra mattress and given it a full review below. We were sent a queen size medium firmness Eco Terra natural hybrid mattress. It’s a more economical hybrid mattress that is made with organic materials and that uses less chemicals in its construction.

Unboxing the Eco Terra Mattress

This bed was made in the USA and I noticed NO smell right out of the box. When a mattress or pillow is made with chemicals you get offgassing that is immediate and that you can smell for days and sometimes weeks. As someone who is sensitive to this, I notice the lack of it! No headache and watering eyes that give me a feeling that I haven’t slept in a few days.

Eco Terra comes in an undecorated (plain) box. Once taken out of the box you’ll see an off-white top cover with gray lines. There are small circles stitched into the cover. That stitching has a specific purple that we’ll get into further in the review.

It has tan sides and once again, the stitching. These details are more expensive to make and distinguish the Eco Terra from other brands. One noticeable difference is that it doesn’t have a logo stitched into the mattress.

Watch the video and see how fast this mattress opens!

In the unboxing video you can see how it popped right out of the box and was really fast to unroll. And it gets right to its full height – no wait time before you can sleep on it.

Eco Terra Mattress Review

As of now, Eco Terra just has one mattress, their natural hybrid. It’s advertised to be:

Eco Terra uses certified organic wool and organic cotton. You’ll see from the tag that besides the pocketed coils, it’s made of latex foam rubber and wool.  Natural latex is made from sap from the rubber tree, not petroleum. They whip the sap into a froth, then bake it into a foam. There are usually drill holes through the latex, which comes from the mold.

Here’s the product tag:

No Memory Foam in this Mattress

Now latex has some bounce to it and this mattress is no different. Combined with the springs you’re not going to sink into this bed a lot. But you can move around easier without that feeling of getting stuck. This mattress doesn’t have memory foam in it. This helps it sleep cooler than foam beds typically sleep.

Generally speaking, latex sleeps cooler than memory foam mattresses because you don’t sink inside of it and form a crevice where your body heat can build up over time and get too warm.

Construction of the Eco Terra Mattress

Made with a top layer organic cotton cover. Since this is sewn on with these little circles, it can’t be removed and washed. So as always, we recommend that you get a waterproof mattress protector before you sleep on it. The idea behind the sewing on the cover is that instead of using toxic glues to hold the materials together (like the wool and cotton), they are sewn into the mattress.

As of when this article was written in May 2020, the Eco Terra mattress website doesn’t have anything other than the mattress (no sheets, pillows, protectors, etc). It’s important to always use a waterproof mattress protector. We recommend the Coop waterproof mattress protector. It helps keep dust mites, bacteria and mold from getting inside your mattress and breaking down the materials. Plus it’s just more hygienic.

There is organic wool stitched into the middle and on the sides.

Then there are 3 inches of talalay latex.

The last layer is supportive Fabric-Encased Coils that reduce motion transfer. There’s 1057 coil count on the queen size. They use 16 gauge (medium) metal on the coils. The outer perimeter is a bit stiffer – 15 gauge coils (medium-firm) for added edge support.

Just remember, the lower the number, the firmer the coils. This combination offers a very comfortable mattress with edge support they say is 26% more durable than a foam mattress.

What to Put your Eco Terra Mattress On

No box springs are needed for your Eco Terra mattress. It will work on an adjustable base, we recommend this Malouf adjustable base. It has massage and independent head incline among other features and has a 20 year warranty.

The Eco Terra natural latex mattress can also be put on foundations, platform bed and slatted bases. You just need a frame that can handle the weight of the bed and anyone sleeping on it.

In the video, we have the Eco Terra bed on a Keetsa gold brushed steel frame. It can support up to 2,000 lbs. It’s minimalist and stylish plus it’s not too low to the ground. It has a 11.5” clearance under the bed and you can add a headboard to it.

Who Should Buy the Eco Terra Mattress?

  • Someone who wants a cooler sleeping mattress
  • You want less chemicals and more natural materials because of ethics, sensitivity or a more green lifestyle
  • You like a medium or firm feel and a faster response when you or someone you sleep with moves around on the bed
  • Likes the idea of a mattress with less chemicals and that’s not made in China with cheaper materials. Eco Terra is made in the USA, in California and they manufacture as well as sell the bed.

So do you have questions for me about the Eco Terra mattress? I’d love to answer them, drop them in the comments. I learn a lot from your comments and always want to help.

How To Buy The Best Bedsheets For Your Mattress Type

The quality and type of mattress you have can mean all the difference between a good night’s sleep and a restless one. The type of sheets you have too can affect your comfort level. And even after waking up refreshed, it’s frustrating to wake up with bedsheets that have popped off the corners.

We all know that sheets come in twin, full, queen, king. But these terms aren’t always a one-size-fits-all. Choosing the right sheets depends on the type of mattress you have. Mattress toppers can make a difference too.

Even if you know which size to get, then there’s figuring out the best sheet material. It can get overwhelming.

Read on to find out more about how to buy the best bedsheets for your mattress type.

Measuring Your Bed

Before you select a standard sheet size, you need to get out a measuring tape and get the exact measurements of your bed.

Most sheet measurements include just the surface–the width and height. But if you have a deep mattress or thick toppers, then finding the best bedsheets means including the depth.

A typical twin bed measures 38 inches wide and 75 inches long. A twin XL mattress has the same width as a standard twin but is 80 inches long. Many college dorm rooms have twin XL mattresses. However, these mattresses can be thinner, so a standard twin mattress might fit anyway. Many colleges will have the mattress measurements available on their website.

When picking out the best bedsheets for a twin, make sure the fitted sheet is 39 by 75 inches (or 80 inches for an XL). The flat sheet should measure 66 by 90 inches, which will work for either type of twin mattress.

A full or double bed measures 54 by 75 inches. If you’re a tall person, you’ll either need to sleep on a diagonal or move up to a queen. The fitted sheet for a full mattress should also be 54 by 75 inches. The flat sheet measures 81 by 96 inches.

A queen is not only wider than a full but also longer. Standard queen beds are 60 inches wide by 80 inches long. Flat sheets for a queen measure the same. The flat sheets measure 90 by 102 inches.

Many people believe that a king bed is the same as two twin beds put together. In fact, it’s the same as two twin XL beds. That’s what makes them such a popular choice for a split king adjustable bed where each person gets the mattress they want but they can be paired to move together or separately.

A king bed is 76 inches wide by 80 inches long. Fitted sheets are 78 by 80 inches, and the flat sheet is 108 by 102 inches.

Some people prefer beds that are a bit longer. In that case, a California king is a wise choice. They measure 72 by 84 inches. It’s not as wide, but a few inches longer than a standard king. This is important to know when buying bed sheets. Regular king sheets won’t fit on a California king mattress.

Mattress Height

As mentioned, the height or depth of a mattress can also make a difference when picking out the best type of bedsheet. If a mattress is extra tall, or if you have a thick topper, then you might want to go up a size for the fitted sheet.

Most boxed mattresses are 7 to 10 inches in height. But some can be as much as 16 to 22 inches high. If you have a mattress that’s more than 12 inches, then you need to find a fitted sheet that has deep pockets or sheets that are stretchy (like Purple’s sheets which fit mattresses from 9 inches up to 14 inches in height).

Pocket depth varies too. So be sure to get a sheet with the appropriate pocket depth. It’s always better to err on the larger side. Otherwise, your sheets will slip off the mattress.

Best Sheet Material

Most experts agree that cotton is the best fabric for bedsheets but it depends on how you sleep.

There are a lot of other options out there that claim to be extra soft. But if they’re made of synthetic material, including polyester, rayon, and microfiber and they can be good for athletes or anyone who sweats a lot because they’re super absorbent.

Synthetic material is durable, is often stain resistant, is sometimes wrinkle-free, and claims to be softer. However, it doesn’t breathe, and that can be bad for your skin, and also the environment.

Tencel is a great option that’s better for the environment. It’s made from fibers of eucalyptus trees which are renewable. Bamboo can be good or bad for the environment depending on how it’s made. Plus, it’s softer than most cotton sheets.

The most luxurious sheets we know of are better than a 4-star hotel. They’re made in England and they’re 600 thread count and can fit up to 19 inch tall beds. They’re the BRAND OF SHEETS THE QUEEN OF ENGLAND SLEEPS ON and bear the royal seal. They’ve been manufactured by the same company since 1861. These are the sheets we sleep on. They’re pure luxury and make you feel like royalty.  Check them out here.

If you want to save money, go for a cotton blend, but be sure that the sheets are mostly cotton, at least 70%.

When buying cotton, the type of cotton you choose is a matter of preference and budget. Egyptian cotton is the highest quality sheet material, followed by Pima cotton.

Organic cotton sheets are free of chemicals. If you don’t buy organic cotton, then be sure to wash your sheets before using.

Cotton Sheet Options

Cotton sheets go by a variety of names–percale, sateen, linen, flannel, and jersey. They all have different assets.

For instance, flannel sheets are a good choice for the winter. They tend to stay warm because of their thickness. The quality of flannel sheets depends on the ounces of material per square yard, instead of thread count. A good flannel sheet will have four or more ounces.

Jersey knit is also a good winter sheet option. But be sure to check the fine print. Some jersey cotton sheets are not 100% cotton, and some are. They tend to be affordable but don’t always last as long as flannel.

For summer, many people prefer linen sheets. Although they don’t come with high thread counts, they are breathable and absorb moisture, which is great for warm summer nights.

For any time of the year, either percale or sateen cotton sheets are great. Percale sheets have a tight weave and are soft and durable. Sateen sheets have a special threading that gives them a luxurious satin quality.

Thread Count

Many people are under the impression that the higher the thread count the better the quality. Thread count, when indicated, means the number of threads per square inch. A higher thread count is denser, so the fabric is heavier and more durable.

But that doesn’t mean softer. Sure, you want to get at least 200 thread count, but more than 800 is overkill.

What’s more important than thread count when choosing the best bedsheets is the quality of the fiber.

Best Bedsheets to Buy

To sum up, the best bedsheets to buy are 100% Egyptian cotton organic percale sheets that have a thread count of at least 200 and the right pocket size to fit your bed. But you have some flexibility in regards to what kind of cotton and what kind of knit, fiber or weave.

It’s a good idea to have a breathable sheet for the summer and thicker sheets to keep you warm in the winter.

Finally, be sure to have a few sets of sheets that you love so that you can change your sheets every week. Once a week is ideal, but every two weeks is fine. If you aren’t in the habit of changing your sheets that often, here’s why you should.

Bedinabox Mattress Review – Top 5 Features of the Serenity Mattress

The Serenity has been discontinued, we recommend that you check out our BedinaBox Original Mattress Review.

BedInABox® Mattress Review

A lot of people use Bed in a Box Mattress like Kleenex – as if it’s the name of all boxed mattresses. But did you know it’s the name of a mattress company? Bed in a Box Mattresses are made in the USA and they have a wide range of mattresses.

Here’s my video review of the BedinaBox brand mattress:

Visit Website

As always, the advantages to buying a mattress online – is that the prices are often lower and most have great/easy exchange policies. Every person is unique and so is their mattress preference. You can research for months unable to make a decision when the best way to know what you like is to narrow down your selection to the materials you like, the height you like, and the price range you are comfortable with. Then start trying your top pick until you find a mattress you love.

It’s not like marriage where getting out of it is painful and costly! You can keep dating until you find the best fit for you and be out nothing until you find the perfect match. Too bad real dating isn’t like that!

First, disclosures: we were given this queen size Serenity Mattress by BedInABox for the purposes of this review. We’re affiliates of BedInABox and your purchase helps us do more reviews.

Affordable Luxury Beds Under $2,000
When we unboxed the Serenity the first thing we thought that it was more luxurious than we expected it to be. We thought it would be an economy mattress. But it’s not.

Bedinabox is based in Tennessee. They have an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau and have been in business since 2007 (over a decade). So although this brand might be new to you, they’ve been in the business for a while.

We all say “Bed-in-a-box,” (sort of like we call tissues Kleenex), but what you probably don’t know is that this company owns the trademark to the term “Bed in a Box”.

They’re a small, family owned business who sells affordable luxury beds that  made in the USA, not just ‘assembled in America’. Since they’ve been around longer they have a wider selection of products from mattresses, to mattress toppers, sheets and adjustable bases.

They have 7 models in various price ranges, starting at $699 for a queen. It comes in more sizes than you’d expect. We never see split queens or split California king sizes!

Here’s the full list:

  • Twin xl
  • Full
  • Queen
  • King
  • California king
  • Short queen
  • Split king
  • Split queen
  • Split California king

Like most boxed brands you’re paying for the top layer and need a mattress frame, box springs or platform to place it on.

We highly recommend that you use a mattress protector before you sleep on any new mattress. Bedinabox carries their own brand of mattress protector in several styles. Using a mattress protector will help prolong the longevity of your mattress and prevent spills from damaging your mattress.

Sleep Trial

You have 120 night sleep trial with all BedinaBox mattresses. That means you have 120 nights to sleep on it and if not satisfied, return it for a full refund. Just be sure to give it at least a month because there’s an adjustment period with all new mattresses. You get used to your mattress over many years, so spending a month adjusting is worth the investment. I take some Tylenol PMs to help me through the first few nights. The longer you’ve slept on your old mattress, the more likely it will take longer to adjust.

The Serenity queen is just under $2,000 which is right where you’ll see similar featured mattresses. There is financing on their website through Affirm that gets your payment at around $60 a month. You can pay and schedule payments online so you don’t miss any. If you qualify, you won’t pay any interest.

Mattress Layers
The Serenity has 5 layers of foam, including memory foam. They do tell you the density of foam that they use, which we appreciate, because most mattress companies don’t give you a lot of detail about that.

Let’s get into a little detail about what how this bed is constructed. This is their high end mattress and it’s like a pillow top which you usually don’t see in boxed brands as often.

The Pillow Top Cover
The cover is quilted and is quite attractive – it has CoolRest® Adaptive foam which is based on technology originally developed to use for space suits. It helps balance temperature between the sleeper and the mattress to help keep the sleeper comfortable throughout the night. There’s 2” of super-soft, gel-infused quilting foam on top.

In addition, there’s 4” of 1.8 lb density, high-quality soy-based transitional foam, progressing from contouring to supporting. Then you have 4” of high-density foam to support body weight and align the spine. This includes a 2.2 lb density core.

Top 5 features of the Serenity Bed in a Box Mattress

Feature #5: The Serenity is 14 inches thick.
This bed has a thicker profile that gives it a higher end feel. If you like a bed that’s higher up, you’ll love this mattress.

Feature #4: The Serenity is reversible.
There’s a softer side and a firmer side. If you prefer to sink into your mattress a bit, choose the soft side. If you prefer to feel like you are sleeping on top of the mattress, choose the firm side.

The quilted cover on top is the soft side but if you decide you really want a firmer feel, you can flip the mattress. While it doesn’t have the plush pillowtop on other side, it still has an elegant quilted cover with a little give. On the soft side, the sleeper sinks into the mattress a bit and is cradled. On the firm side, the sleeper sleeps more on top of the mattress, but still with the comfort and look of a quilted cover.

Feature #3: A bed with handles!
Since this mattress can be reversed it’s nice that they give you these handles to help you turn it. I wouldn’t lift it by the handles alone but they can help you turn or flip the mattress. It weighs 100 lbs.

Feature #2: The Serenity has a 20 year warranty
This is a longer warranty than the typical 10 years and a slightly longer trial period. It has free shipping too.

Feature #1: Made in the USA and has almost no smell/offgassing
I’m very sensitive to offgassing and this mattress had almost no smell.

We really like these family-owned mattress companies like Bedinabox and our recent RV mattress review of the Tochta. Your mattress gets shipped faster and the quality tends to be higher too.
