Avocado Green Pillow Review

We reviewed a standard size Avocado Green Pillow.

Going in my questions were, how will it hold its shape? Is it comfortable? And, will it sleep hot. I’ve tested some latex products in the past that were too warm, so I wanted to know if this pillow slept warm.

I was sent this pillow to review because I was curious how a shredded latex pillow compared to a memory foam pillow.

See the Avocado Green Pillow in our Avocado Pillow Review Video

Avocado Green Pillow Materials

Unlike the Avocado Molded Latex Pillow, which comes in a box and is flat, the Avocado Green Pillow comes rolled and in a reusable organic cotton bag.

It has a 100% certified organic certified cotton quilted cover. Then inside of that there’s an organic cotton jersey liner with a zipper so that you can remove fill and adjust the pillow to your preference. It comes pretty stuffed but you can make it flatter or leave it more full. You can also purchase extra fill to replace or add fill to this pillow, which adds to its longevity.

Inside the Avocado Green Pillow contains a 70/30 blend of shredded latex and kapok tree fibers.

Avocado Green Pillows

Adjustable Latex Pillow

The extra zippered part and the ability to add or remove the fill inside to fit your personal preference. The zipper makes is easy adjust so it’s the perfect height for you.

The fill is natural organic certified latex rubber foam ribbons and organic certified kapok tree fiber. Kapok is basically a down alternative that doesn’t involve any geese. The kapok tree fiber is key here because it forms a matrix that binds all of the latex together. If you don’t have something like this holding the pillow insides together, then your pillow is more likely to get lumpy as pieces stick together and may clump over time. But this fiber keeps that from happening. It’s also super soft.

This pillow is also hypoallergenic, sustainable, biodegradable, non-toxic, and grown pesticide-free. And it’s vegan.

Why does it matter if this pillow is hypoallergenic? Well it matters most if you have allergies and if you want to live a more green lifestyle. I have a reaction to some of the chemicals used on memory foam so I appreciate that these pillows didn’t need to air out for a day or longer. And that I didn’t wake up with a headache, watery eyes and congestion.

Pillow Protector Recommended

The organic cotton cover can get water or sweat marks, so in this case I would get the organic cotton pillow protector which Avocado sells. It’s not waterproof but it’s thicker and quilted. This will help prolong the life of your pillow and make it softer plus even out the feel.

However, you should know that’s not waterproof. Or if you sweat a lot or spill liquids on your pillow I highly recommend a waterproof cover like this one.

Avocado is a natural brand and of course waterproofing isn’t natural. However, I’ve seen their mattress cover and the fabric is just gorgeous.

GOTS Certified NonToxic Pillow

Next point is that the pillow is GOTS certified.

Now what about GOTS certification and how is it is key to the Avocado brand? First, GOTS stands for The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). This is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibres, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain.

Some brands will fake it but the whole point is to verify the authenticity of the materials and Avocado has certified each piece of this pillow.

You have the latex inside that’s made in the U.S. from sustainably harvested and organic sources. It’s GOTS certified.

Then the kapok, which is made from the CEIBA TREE. It’s also GOLS certified.

Then you have the organic cotton Certified Organic Cotton cover that’s not only GOTS certified but it earned the most stringent Organic OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, Class 1 Certification.

So you have each component that’s GOTS certified. And you can check to confirm that they do meet the standards of this governing board. And they do. So that builds trust and lets you know this is authentic.

What you need to know is that Avocado is a natural brand and they don’t use the cheapest materials from China. The price for this pillow is about on the same as other brands, yet it’s higher quality.

Buy Avocado Pillow

Comfort
I found this pillow to be very comfortable. The latex provides the structure and adds support.

Temperature
What about the temperature?

If you either sleep hot already or not, you don’t want your pillow to get too warm while you sleep. And the pillow lived up to its promise and didn’t sleep warm. Sometimes I’m afraid that latex will sleep hot because it’s a natural rubber product, but this is shredded and there’s air flow. So no problem there. It doesn’t retain heat.

Sizes
Some pillows only come in one size so I think it’s important to see. We only use king size pillows on our bed. Avocado pillow comes in standard, queen and king.

Price
A queen is $89. Just a note about pillows and price. It’s one of the most healthy, chemical-free pillows you can buy and it’s about the same price as similar quality pillows that are not green.

I used to pay around $35 for a pillow and there was no way I’d pay much more. But then I noticed I went through several pillows a year. And I was never really happy after about 3 months because they broke down and didn’t have as much support. What I’ve found is it’s worth it to pay more for a pillow – my pillows last for years without breaking down. So now I even give pillows for Christmas gifts. I think they’re so important. I’m a pillow evangelist. They’re so personal.

WARRANTY AND SLEEP TRIAL
You get a 1 year warranty and a 100 night sleep trial.

Avocado Green Molded Latex Pillow Review

The Avocado Green molded latex Pillow is made in the USA, in Los Angeles specifically, and features certified organic and GOTS materials. I was sent this pillow to review and I requested it because I wanted to compare latex to their shredded memory foam pillow. Our small business is reader supported and we may earn a commission when you shop through my links.

Avocado Pillow Materials

Let’s start with what the pillow is made of. It has a 100% GOTS organic certified cotton cover that’s sourced responsibly from India but stitched in their factory. The cover unzips and you can remove it to clean and spot clean the latex.

Then inside the cover is a molded charcoal-infused latex core that offers more support. The pillow itself is all one piece, which is why it’s called a molded pillow. To make the pillow, they pour latex into a mold that is the shape of the pillow and steam-bake it. This makes the core firm and supportive. Charcoal is added to reduce odor while managing temperature and moisture.

The advantage of a molded pillow is that it keeps its shape and offers dependable support.

Be aware that the organic cotton cover can get discolored with water or sweat marks. So we recommend that you also get the organic cotton pillow protector which Avocado sells. It’s nontoxic and quilted so it’s thicker and quiet, but it’s not waterproof.

So if you sweat a lot or spill liquids on your pillow I highly recommend a waterproof mattress protectorAvocado is a natural brand and the waterproofing on this pillow protector isn’t natural but that’s what I use. But I’m going to say I’ve seen their mattress cover and their fabric is just gorgeous. So you decide what works for you.

Avocado Pillow Video Review

Want to see what the pillow looks like when lying on the side or back? Check out our Avocado pillow review here:

Natural/Green Pillow

Avocado Molded Latex pillow is GREENGUARD Gold Certified by UL Environment. It’s scientifically tested to meet the world’s most rigorous emissions standards for chemical exposure and pollutants. Few pillows qualify for this gold standard and Avocado is an honest brand that is focused on more natural, sustainably grown materials.

The company itself is carbon negative — offsetting more carbon emissions than they generate.

Avocado Pillow Sizes

The Avocado molded latex pillow comes in standard, queen and king. Many boxed brands don’t carry king size, so we like that you have that options. We put 2 king size pillows on our king size bed.

The Avocado molded latex pillow is 5 inches in height and is machine washable.

Avocado Pillow Price

A queen is $109 which is on par with other pillows of this quality, but it has the benefits of being more environmentally friendly and organic.

Warranty and Sleep Trial

You get a generous 1 year warranty with the Avocado pillow and it has a 100 night sleep trial. We don’t usually see pillows with this long of a warranty. In our experience, a quality pillow like this one will last far longer than a year though.

Bed Pillow Made Mostly of Air? Airweave Pillow Review

By | neck pillow, Boxed Pillow Reviews | No Comments

AirweaveIf you like a firmer pillow that will keep it’s shape, not get flat or lumpy and sleeps cool, then check out our Airweave pillow review. And if after reading this review, you decide to purchase an Airweave pillow, be sure to use our code UNBOX  to take 10% Off any pillow purchase.

We were sent an Airweave pillow and were curious because of the unique features. It’s much like their mattress because, it’s made mostly out of air and what they call Airfiber. There’s no foam or memory foam at all.

Made in Japan, many Japanese top athletes, airlines and hotels use Airweave products. In fact, if you look at the high reviews on Amazon, they’re mostly in Japanese. The funny part is that they call this pillow plush! It’s not! Regardless, we don’t recommend that you look at the review on Amazon, but we don’t recommend that you buy from there. It costs more and you can’t apply the coupon. Click here to read Airweave reviews in English.

This is a review of the Airweave pillow. They also have an S-line pillow. It came in a box, with a reusable, zippered cloth bag with handles for easy transport. The pillow itself came wrapped in plastic. We partner with different bedding companies to bring you reviews and are reader supported so when you shop through our links, we may earn a commission.

Be sure to scroll down to watch the video so you can see the Airweave pillow in action. In that video, I washed stains off the pillow and demonstrate different sleeping positions and how the pillow conforms (side, stomach or back sleeping positions).

Airweave Pillow Review

The Airweave pillow is more of a therapeutic pillow because it helps align your neck and provides a steady sleeping surface to support it. Most of airweave’s products are made from airfiber. And like the name suggests, it’s made mostly of air. Underneath the quilted breathable pillow case is a core made of airfiber which allows airflow through the pillow.

Airweave is a great firm for those with back or neck pain since it doesn’t go flat or change shape over time. Additionally, it has a lower profile so your neck will be at the best height for support.

I found this pillow comfortable (I’m a side sleeper) but not huggable. This isn’t a fluffy pillow, it’s more rigid and since I’m used to moving mine around and hugging it in my sleep, I found myself not needing to do that. It provides support for my neck (if I were a stomach sleeper I would remove the inserts because I found it a little too tall).

Germaphobes will love Airweave because everything is washable and hypoallergenic. You can wash the pillow or even vacuum it. The Airfiber doesn’t collect dust mites, sweat or other things that usually get absorbed into a pillow and cause it to break down or cause an allergic reaction.

What Airweave Pillow is Made Of

As we pointed out there’s no foam, feathers, down or latex in Airweave. The cover does add some softness while maintaining the breathability. I didn’t notice a smell at all.

1 outer cover made of 100% Polyester
1 airfiber® ring core made of 100% Polyester
2 airfiber® inserts Inserts: 100% airfiber® (polyethylene)
Inner Pad: Polyester 100%
Batting: Polyester 100%

Airweave pillow with cover, inner ring and inserts

Airweave Pillow Size and Thickness

One Size 15.7″ x 22.4″ x 4.3″ so the height is 4.3″ tall.

Weight: 2.2lb (very lightweight).

Your pillow should be around 3 to 6 inches thick.
The height of the pillow should be neither too high so that it tilts the head too far forward, nor too low that it extends the neck and tilts the head upwards. Generally, the pillow should be around 3 to 6 inches thick to provide adequate support. Unlike back and stomach sleepers, side sleepers require extra support.

A Pillow with Cooling Tech

Sleep hot and wake up in sweat? You won’t with Airweave because of their proprietary Airfiber® technology.  Airfiber lowers core body temperature faster so you fall into a deeper sleep faster. Whereas foam absorbs and traps body heat and can get uncomfortably warm, Airfiber has airflow and will not sleep hot because your body heat can easily dissipate.

And if you sleep hot, Airweave’s mattress is made from the exact same breathable material. It won’t sleep hot! The mattress and the pillow are lightweight and portable. In fact, the mattress comes in a box in 3 pieces that you put together and put the pad and cover over. Both the mattress and the pillow are made in Japan.

FREE Shipping in the Lower 48

Every item ships free within the contiguous 48 states. If you live in Hawaii or Canada, you can contact them for a quote.

Returns

You have 30 days to return the pillow in new condition. A $20 fee will be deducted from the refund for the shipping & restocking.

Airweave Pillow Cost

I expect this pillow to be long-lasting and durable based on how it’s made and the fact that there’s no foam to degrade over time. Cost for an Airweave pillow is $200. They do offer financing through Klarna – as low as $34/month.

Airweave Pillow Review on YouTube

Does it make noise when you move around?

Initially I was worried that the airfiber would be noisy but I didn’t hear anything and slept well the whole night.

Who would like this pillow?

You have neck pain and need to have constant support that keeps your neck in a straight line or close to it.

You have breathing issues or sleep on your stomach and don’t want to worry about cutting off some of your airway when you sleep.

You sleep hot and sweat a lot so regular pillows get soaked or wet and then you have to sleep in that.

Sleep trial
You have 100 nights nights to try out Airweave pillow and if it’s not for you, get a full refund.

A Pillow Made of Air?? 6 Facts about the Airweave Pillow

  1. Breathable – you can easily breath through the whole pillow. Even with the pillow lying on your mattress.
  2. Firmer Pillow that holds up your head and won’t sink in very much.
  3. Antimicrobial, Hypoallergenic, and Odor-resistant. You could literally vacuum this pillow every day to get allergens out. Whereas foam is like a giant sponge that traps things inside, the Airweave pillow doesn’t have anything that absorbs substances, dust, etc.
  4. Washable. If you’re a germaphobe or just like things clean, this pillow (and their mattress) is super clean. Not just in style with minimalist esthetics. You can put the entire pillow in the washing machine, making it easy to keep clean. You can wash everything, including the core of the insert.
  5. Sleeps Cooler because it’s mostly air so you have airflow between your head and the bed. It doesn’t have foam that sinks in and creates a crevice for your head where your body heat can build up in.
  6. Adjustable Height with 2 Inserts. Stomach sleeper and need a thinner pillow, just remove the 2 inserts and you’ll take about an inch from the pillow height.

The mattress is similar, reminds me of a baby mattress called Newton Baby. It’s also breathable.

Drawbacks are I can’t find a warranty and the sleep trial isn’t free as you have a restocking fee if you return the pillow (probably because these pillows are imported from Japan). However, if you are searching for the perfect firm pillow for you, it could be worth it. There are truly unique features you cannot find anywhere else.

Sleep ovation pillow and box

THIS PILLOW HAS SPRINGS! It’s like a mattress for your head. Yet, unlike a mattress, you don’t have to share it with anyone.

Will the springs inside poke you? No. We couldn’t even feel the springs and wouldn’t know that they were there if we didn’t know. They are in the center layer and you can’t see, hear or feel them at all. They were silent. From the reviews we read, even after years of sleeping, they couldn’t hear any squeaks from the springs.

The SleepOvation pillow is comprised of 77 individual cushions combined with pocketed micro-springs to provide pressure relief to the contours of your face, head, and neck. It keeps your neck in a neutral position. The feedback we heard most is how it helps with neck pain.

Get Help with Neck Pain

SleepOvation Pillow Review {Video}

This video shows you how different the SleepOvation pillow is compared to a regular pillow.

Sleep Ovation PillowBest Pillow for Neck Pain?

If you have any sort of back or neck pain Sleep Ovation recommends using one and sleeping flat on your back. When you lay your head on this pillow, it feels as if it applies the pressure as per the needs of the contour of your face and neck. Here’s what they said about the research that went into the design:

The pillow was in development for nearly three years. During that time the pillow went through many different sizes and dimensions to find the final design. During this time we had sleep testers that would sleep with the pillow and then provide feedback using a survey. Most of the testers had pain related ailments. The final size and design was ultimately determined based on the data collected from the sleep testers catering to the best results for pain relief.

Interestingly, most people think a pillow needs to be much thicker than our pillow. This is based upon the fact that before our pillow, you would need to plump and adjust the pillow fill to get the right amount of support (fill) in different regions to correspond to the features on your head, face, and neck. A problem with this “plumping technique” is that once you change your sleeping position during the night, the pillow no longer conforms to your features and has to be “re-plumped”.

The SleepOvation 77 tiny pillows in One pillow, doesn’t have to be “plumped” as it continually adjusts to the sleepers changing sleep positions. Consequently, the pillow has been engineered to be the exact thickness (4+ inches) required for optimum neck and head alignment.

The SleepOvation pillow is one of the best option for you if you suffer from neck or back pain and can’t find anything to get some relief. The company says it’s recommended by physiotherapists.

The company said that many customers that are side sleepers like to fold the pillow in half. Or, they use two pillows, stacked on top of each other. This pillow is surprisingly comfortable. Your head doesn’t sink too far into the pillow so it keeps your neck in alignment.

SleepOvation Pillow Thickness

Overall, the Sleep Ovation pillow is thinner than we expected: 4¼” – but that wasn’t an issue. It doesn’t compress down as much as other pillows. Stomach sleepers need a thinner pillow so their neck isn’t pulled upwards so this would be an excellent choice for them.

One thing we noticed is that the pillow doesn’t look very like the photos on the website. Each section is scored, not encased as it looks like in the drawings and animations. This image illustrates the difference.

Difference between Sleep Ovation mattress and pillow inside

Pros:

  • The covers are washable and you can vacuum the pillow between each section.
  • The cold blue polyamide and airflow will help keep sweat away and sleeps cooler. You won’t need to flip it over during the night to find the cool side of the pillow.
  • Adjusts the surface of the pillow at the exact moment you change your head position which helps with headaches.
  • Can help back, shoulder and neck pain caused by a too plump pillow.
  • Recommended by physiotherapists.

Visit Official Website

Cons:

  • Not very thick so it won’t look the same on a made bed as fluffier pillows (aesthetic difference).
  • On the expensive side but people report that it doesn’t change after years of use. They offer a $6/mo payment plan.
  • Should use a waterproof pillow protector to avoid having the foam absorb liquids or be affected by spills. However, there are two layers of protection.

The Top 3 Pillows I Recommend All the Time

By | neck pillow | No Comments

Are you the kind of person who brings your pillow with them when travel? Hi, I’m Janet and I’m a pillow snob. But I wasn’t always. For years I spent around $40 for a pillow that I bought at Target or Walmart.

They’d go flat and I’d be frustrated and buy another brand hoping to find the best one. It never worked. They were garbage. Even when I splurged and bought a better pillow, they wouldn’t stand the test of time.

Well I finally found pillows I love and bring with me on trips or vacations. Otherwise I take the chance that the hotel pillows will be small or cheaply made.

These are more expensive pillows but they last for years (at least 2 years already and still showing no sign of flattening or wearing out). Plus they’re so comfortable. I gave my mom the Brooklyn Bedding pillow and she loves it so much she takes it on vacations!

Note: we use affiliate links so we may earn a commission if you buy based on my recommendation.

Each of these is priced reasonably – under $100 and worth every cent. Now my pillows last for years.

Top 3 Favorite Pillows I Recommend

Brooklyn Bedding Shredded Memory Foam Pillow

The Brooklyn Bedding is our top pick based on the value. We get king size but it comes in queen too. I made friends with the manager at a Brooklyn Bedding store and told him my pillow woes. He insisted theirs was the best. I didn’t buy it. But since he gave me one to try I had nothing to lose.

Well since then I not only LOVE this pillow but I’ve purchased several more. Each time a pillow gets worn out I replace it with a Brooklyn Bedding. This pillow is huggable but more substantial (the heaviest of the three).

It comes quite stuffed but does have a zipper so you can make it the perfect loft for you. We haven’t removed any of the memory foam.

SIZES: Standard, queen and king

PROS: The memory foam is in a sharp cut and the pillow has special webbing to hold the pieces together so it won’t bunch up, clump or go flat. Incredibly comfortable. Costs $44 for a queen, which is very reasonable and less than our other selections.

CONS: The gray pattern shows through a white pillow case but not if you have a pillow protector (plus gray doesn’t show stains as much as white).

Pacific Coast DownAround Pillow – Soft

This pillow is my other favorite, it’s a synthetic feather that’s so soft and dreamy. After sleeping on one of their pillows at a hotel, I wanted to know the brand. So I removed the pillow protector and pillow cases to take a look at the tag. It was Pacific Coast. Then I contacted the company to see exactly which one it was. This is the closest.

This is a lightweight feather type of pillow without the allergies, from a trusted brand that’s been making feather pillows since the 1800s. Your grandma may have had one! And years in, it’s still amazing! This is the pillow I reach for when I want to cuddle or mold it.

Pacific Coast pillowSIZES: Standard, queen and king

PROS: You’ll find this pillow dreamy and lighter yet substantial. No allergies or poky feathers. Yet it feels like feathers and it’s super durable.

CONS: It’s tough to find any drawbacks.

Nolah Airfiber Pillow

This one hasn’t been around as long but it’s the softest, airiest pillow on this list. It is like a cloud. Soft. Molds to your head yet supports it. Maybe you haven’t heard of Nolah, but we’re a big fan. The pillows exceeded our expectations.

SIZES: Queen

PROS: So light, fluffy and dreamy. Squishy.

CONS: Only comes in queen size only – no king or standard.

Next up I want to try the Purple Harmony Pillow.

Layla Pillow Review – Soft and Comfortable Copper Infused Pillow

By | Boxed Pillow Reviews, feather/down, memory foam pillow, neck pillow, other pillows | No Comments

Layla Pillow Review

Layla has a copper infused memory foam pillow that’s super soft and features some unusual fill material you probably haven’t heard of.

Layla Sleep is dedicated to bringing the health and cooling benefits of copper to all of their products. They also try to find sustainable materials all at the same price as most boxed pillow brands.

Layla Pillow Review

First, the pillow specs
Sizes: standard and king

Material: 70% responsive memory foam and 30% Kapok fibers, which comes from the seed pod fluff the Kapok tree. This is a sustainable option which is natural, free from pesticides and chemicals. Feels like down.
Cover: geometric pattern with polyester, rayon viscose and Lycra. This is also where you’ll find the copper for cooling, to provide antibacterial properties, and health benefits. Is not removable or adjustable (no zipper).
Best for: Back and side sleepers. Too thick for stomach sleepers.
Trial Period: 120 days
Warranty: 5 years
Price: check current price – payment plan is available

Note: there are affiliate links in this post and we may earn a small commission on purchases.

Our Impressions

The Layla pillow can be machine washed and dried, although they’ve updated their site to not recommend it. They even now suggest it will void the warranty. We did wash it and it held up very well with some fuzziness to the fibers. If you do wash it, be sure to wash on gentle and air dry.

As far as the cover, it’s very attractive with small pillows or tufts in it. The pattern is nice and we like that it’s not the same look you always see. We recommend that you get a pillow protector (a copper infused pillow protector) to keep bacteria, sweat, drool and everything else from destroying your pillow. Though the copper might help, it’s best not to let those substances get in and start to break down the fill.

This pillow has a memory foam feeling but not a SHREDDED memory foam fill. Rather it’s cut in larger pieces. That means it keeps its shape and doesn’t clump up like some pillows in this category.

You can adapt the pillow to fit your preference by bunching up the fill to your preference.

Layla Pillow Pros/Cons

Our customers were fascinated with this pillow. Almost everyone who saw it asked about it. Some thought it was pricey but it’s in line with most boxed brand pillows. We’ve found that they last for longer and so are often worth the price.

We loved how soft and moldable Layla’s pillow is. It’s so comfortable and has a different feel than any other pillow we’ve reviewed (besides the Purple pillow).

As far as cooling properties we didn’t notice it was particularly cooling yet it didn’t sleep warm either.

Overall we would recommend Layla Sleep copper infused memory foam pillow if you’re a side or back sleeper who wants something soft and moldable (even huggable) but that keeps its shape. Bonus: you may get recovery and health benefits from it too!

Pillow Shopping 101: Everything You Need To Know To Buy The Perfect Pillow

By | Boxed Pillow Reviews, body pillow, memory foam pillow, neck pillow, other pillows, pregnancy pillow | No Comments

Unbox Mattress may get a small commission on any sales when you shop from our links. This enables us to continue to buy bedding products our reviews.

Did you know that nearly a third of all Americans are sleep deprived? That means 40.6 million people in America aren’t getting enough sleep every night.

Sleep deprivation can lead to impaired motor vehicle skills, relationship stress, and a poor quality of life across the board. Not getting enough sleep can also impact your appearance and accelerate the aging process.

But the good news is, there has never been a better time to get help with a good night’s sleep. Pillow shopping for the best pillow may change your sleep habits entirely.

Before you invest in strange gimmicks to get better rest it’s important to start with a great pillow. Read on to learn how to find the perfect pillow for you.

1. Consider Your Sleep Habits

Your sleep habits are the biggest factor in picking out the right pillow for your needs. You may be tempted by a thick, plush pillow, or the newest memory foam.

But these pillow types aren’t for everyone. People who sleep on their side generally need a thicker pillow for the support required for a good night’s sleep.

People who sleep on their stomach or put a pillow between their knees will want to buy pillows that are a bit thinner. And if you sleep on your back something in-between is the best bet.

Your health or body changes may necessitate a different pillow. Women who are pregnant can get the extra support of a pregnancy pillow.

If you’re like me I have a pillow collection and have different preferences depending on my mood or how I’m sleeping.

2. Read The Reviews

Thank goodness for the internet. We have so many options today that we don’t have to settle for a pillow that isn’t perfect for us.

Pillow shopping is that much easier because of the easy availability of online reviews. You can do a great deal of homework on what people think before you even enter a store.

In the past, people were confronted with pushy salespeople in bedding stores. They were left to trust the word of these sales associates and still might not get a good night’s sleep.

But make sure you look for reviews of other customers. And don’t stop at the reviews on a company’s website.

3. Test Them Out

Don’t hesitate to grab a pillow in the store and give it a test drive. if you have learned about your sleeping habits and researched the reviews your field should be narrowed down by now.

The best part about buying a pillow online is that you can sleep on it and still return it for a refund if you’re not a fan. Just find out about the terms ahead of time and keep the pillow in the plastic bag. Most boxed pillow brands give you 100 days trial and a generous warranty.

4. Consider The Materials

Did you know that you should likely be replacing your pillow every 6 months? Even if the pillow is durable and retains its shape, you could be providing a home for dangerous dust mites.

This means you should consider the materials that fill your pillow based more on comfort and preference than durability.

Any pillow you buy with solid reviews should be able to provide solid support and comfort for 6 months at the very least.

Down, Feather & Synthetic

You can choose from down, feather, and synthetic materials. If you opt for a feather pillow make sure no feathers stick out.

If they do, it could be a sign the stitching is not tight enough on your pillow. Without solid stitching and a tight cover, you can be uncomfortable and more prone to capturing dust and mites in your pillow. You’ll find our top pick for a down pillow at the end of this article where we list our favorites that we’ve had for 6 months or longer that have held up and that we keep reaching for.

5. Allergy Concerns

Did you know that your allergies could be greatly aggravated just from your pillow? More than 50 billion Americans suffer from allergies each year.

If you are having trouble with your allergies you should pay special care when selecting the right pillow. People with allergies should know how to buy a pillow that protects them during sleep times.

Shredded memory foam pillows are popular with boxed mattress brands. Just like a mattress your pillow can have a lot of chemicals on it which some people are allergic to (off gassing or chemical smell). We see this most often when the pillows are made in China.

There are hypoallergenic fills and materials to ease your discomfort. Also, make sure to change your pillow regularly and wash the cover often.

Just washing the pillowcase isn’t enough though. A pillow protector is easy to remove and wash. It’ll make your pillows last longer.

Just like with mattresses, sweat, droll and other substances get into your pillow attract bacteria and immediately start breaking down the materials. Wash them with your pillow cases and make sure to get one that’s waterproof (follow the manufacturer’s directions to avoid removing the waterproof qualities after washing).

Everlasting Comfort 100% Waterproof Pillow Protector, Hypoallergenic Pillow Covers, Breathable Membrane, Lifetime Replacement Guarantee (Standard, 2-Pack)Everlasting Comfort 100% Waterproof Pillow Protector, Hypoallergenic Pillow Covers, Breathable Membrane, Lifetime Replacement Guarantee (Standard, 2-Pack)

6. Thread Count

The higher the thread count on your pillow cover, the softer the pillow will feel. Even if you invest in luxury pillowcases, the pillow can still feel rough without proper thread count.

Anything over 300 is generally soft. But many people will find that 6-700 thread counts are that much more comfortable.

7. Care Instructions

You want a pillow that will be easy to care for. Make sure you look at the care instructions before you buy. Generally speaking we recommend that you air dry pillows even if it says you can put them in the dryer.

8. Your Needs Can Change

Many people put off replacing their pillow way too long. They have gone to the trouble of breaking in their pillow and at this point, it is almost like an old friend.

But putting off changing your pillow can be a health hazard. It can keep dust and allergens no matter how much you try and care for it.

Changing your pillow infrequently can also impact you getting a good night’s sleep. The truth is that people’s needs change.

You may have different aches and pains. Or maybe you have gained or lost weight.

If you are sleeping in different ways your pillow should reflect these shifts. Make sure you are open minded to changing if need be.

Pillow Shopping And More

Of all the pillows Unbox Mattress has tested so far, these are our 3 favorites:

Layla Sleep Pillow – this is a truly unique pillow and everyone who saw it on one of our mattresses was interested and wanted to try it. It’s so comfortable!! The cover is copper infused (just like the mattress). Inside is a blend of kapok fiber and memory foam. It’s squishy and wonderful. Our only wish is that they came in king size!

Layla pillow

Brooklyn Bedding Shredded Memory Foam Pillow – you may be familiar with My Pillow and Brooklyn Bedding is similar but better because it held its shape better than My Pillow. We didn’t get the crevice in the middle and it didn’t get lumpy or go flat. You can also add/remove the foam for a customized pillow feel. Comes in standard sizes.

Pacific Coast Down Pillow – if you want a classic down pillow, this is the one we recommend. It’s higher quality and many hotels use this pillow. When life is hard, get a soft pillow. This brand is time tested (making pillows for decades) and preferred by many.

Pacific Coast Double Down Around Set (2 Queen Pillows) (2)Pacific Coast Double Down Around Pillow

For many people buying a pillow is only the first step. They want to pair their pillow shopping with the perfect mattress for their sleep needs.

The good news is that Unbox Mattress can help. We offer reviews and advice on buying the best products to get you a great night’s sleep.

We are dedicated to helping people get better sleep for a better life. Our company started after meeting with several mattress CEOs and seeing that most mattress reviewers were male and never included kids in their approach. We hope to help the whole family get good sleep.

Need a Pregnancy Pillow? Here Are the Best Maternity Pillows

By | Bedding, Boxed Pillow Reviews, memory foam pillow, neck pillow, other pillows, pregnancy pillow | No Comments

Many women say pregnancy is/was one of the best times of their life. It’s a time to prepare for parenthood by watching the miracle of life happen right before your eyes. This comes with many joyous moments – like watching your belly bump grow and feeling your baby kick for the first time.

But, pregnancy has challenges, too. One of the most noteworthy difficulties is how much harder it is to fall asleep and stay asleep through the night. As your baby grows so does the strain on your body, including that baby bump that makes getting in the right sleeping position a challenge.

Thankfully, a pregnancy pillow can help with that! Here are a few reasons to buy a pregnancy pillow, and some of the best options to choose from.

The Benefits of Using a Pregnancy Pillow

If you haven’t experienced the pains of pregnancy yet, you will.  Such pain will get in the way of everything you do from how good you sleep at night to how active you are during the day. Just leaning down to pick something up or tie your shoes can be difficult.

Keep reading to discover how pregnancy pillows can combat this discomfort.

First, we warn you NOT to sleep on your stomach without support. It’s not safe because it will decrease blood flow. It can cause dizziness, shortness of breath, or a fast heart rate too. Most pregnant women  sleep on their side but there is a way to sleep on your stomach. Simply use a donut-shaped pregnancy pillow to support your growing belly.

Less Pain

When you’re pregnant, your body has to support your baby. As the baby grows, more and more strain is put on your back. This is because there’s an uneven distribution of weight and the back is feeling the pressure of the baby inside the womb.

Your feet and ankles, hips, knees, neck and shoulders will hurt towards the final weeks of pregnancy. But, the less pain you have from now until then, the better. Plus you need good sleep to support all the extra work your body is doing. When baby comes it’ll be even harder to sleep!

Sleeping with a pregnancy pillow gives you extra support. A pillow is a great place to rest your tired back or to prop up your feet at the end of the day (because they’ll probably be swollen).

Better Sleep

The feeling of “sleeping on a cloud” may sound impossible, but deep rest is possible. It’s just a matter of finding the right position in which to sleep with the support of a pregnancy pillow.

When you learn how to support your back and adjust your whole body on your mattress, sleep becomes much easier to achieve. Who knows, you may even sleep better than you did before you were pregnant! You may even keep it.

Best Pregnancy Pillows

It’s one thing to read about what a maternity pillow can do for you and another to realize it yourself. You can’t buy any pregnancy pillow, though. For the best results, you have to buy the best pillow for your body’s needs.

You can choose from a full body pillow or other configurations. Here are some of the top options to choose from.

Boppy Side Sleeper Pillow

While there’s benefit in getting a pregnancy body pillow, you may want to look into some smaller options, too. Check out the Boppy Side Sleeper Pillow.

Instead of wrapping your whole body around this pillow, the Boppy is made to support the front of the belly and the lower back. It targets these areas thanks to the two cushions on either side, which are connected by a panel of fabric for you to lay on top of.

This pregnancy pillow is ideal for side sleepers and will take up less space on the bed. It’s uniquely shaped and travels well.

Hiccapop Memory Foam Pregnancy Pillow

Many women like the Boppy Side Sleeper Pillow because it’s much easier to travel with than a full-sized maternity pillow. If you have a few travel plans coming up, you may want to look into the Hiccapop Pregnancy Pillow.

This is a small support pillow meant to go right under your baby bump. You lay it flat on the bed then turn onto your side to rest the bump on the pillow. This little bit of support goes a long way. This is a soft wedge pillow.

Sleeping with such a pillow means you can move around if you’re one to change positions throughout the night. More so, it ensures comfort wherever you go thanks to how compact and light-weight it is.
